Interactions and intercultural ties in the total institution. The case of detention centers for foreigners
The author focuses his attention on the influence of formal and legal conditions of the operation of the total institution on interpersonal relations. These conditions result in certain features of the total institution, such as minimizing physical intimacy, power omnipotence, hierarchy of power, isolation from the outside, etc. The reference point for the deliberations are detention centers for foreigners in Poland. In particular, author focuses his attention on the psychosocial consequences of the principles of the functioning of such an institution, which determine the relationships between the staff of institution and foreigners. The author tries to answer a number of questions: what kind of relationship, based on what basis (standards, values) is created between culturally and socially diversed actors (staff and foreigners)? How do different groups of social actors create and sustain cultural and social distances? What is the verbal and non-verbal communication system between different groups of social actors?
