Labor's Transnational Solidarities
My presentation focuses on mid-19th Century transatlantic labor solidarities facilitated by interactions and cooperation among the Abolitionist, Chartist, and Irish Land Rights Movements. Drawing upon Frederick Douglass' involvements and colaborations with all three movements, I examine how key words, such as of emancipation and freedom, entered into the lexicon of labor and socialist movements via the voices and strivings of men and women who transformed socialist discourses and doctines into popular movements, forging and facilitating connections among seemingly disparate movements.
