Description

This is a study on tourism and regional management over Nagashima Island in Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture. This paper focuses on analysis of student tours conducted in 2018. Nagashima Island has two National Sanatoriums and one of them was the first national sanatorium in Japan built in 1930. Since Nagashima Island used be a desert island, it was chosen as an isolation facility for leprosy patients by the government. A few hundreds of recuperates still live there. Since leprosy is a disease to be cured today, Nagashima's two national sanatoriums are not newly hospitalized. Japanese government promised to guarantee living to the former leprosy patients and Nagashima Island will be return to Setouchi City in the future. Setouchi City is trying to tourize Nagashima and nearby areas little by little. People want Nagashima to set to register as a World Heritage Site and established NPO. However, it seems that the concept of this tourism has not been fully developed.
