Description

Nationalistic and ethnic enmities underlying current popular political discourses, and drawing on manipulated historical narratives, suggest that the tragic lessons of colonialism and twentieth century's totalitarianisms are being ignored and forgotten. The goal of this session is to discuss xenophobia and socio-cultural discrimination, and to ground their analyses in ethnographic glocalised reflections. This task is especially pertinent today, a time of voluntary and forced migration and of the related phenomena of racism, cultural racism, and cultural fundamentalism. This Plenary session will describe and address such deepening antagonisms today and explore forms of solidarity and alliance that are emerging to counter them.
