The workshop will be consists of two parts - an experimental and reflexive one. In the first part participants will take part in an individual sound walk based on letterists concept of urban drifting (Debord 1956). It will be immersive experience of various parts of the city through acousmatic sounds – listening to imagined soundscapes. It will be listening to in motion using headphones and mobile players and apps. Participants will be listening to sound maps, composed ambiences based on field recordings, different kinds of signals converted into sound, sounds coming from outside the urban context and will try to compose own soundtracks. The second part of workshop will be stationary and reflexive during which we will discuss category of experiencing through sound – its usefulness in mobile urban research. We will get to know or deepen our knowledge about anthropological concepts of immersion (Helmreich 2001; Ingold 2007, 2011), acoustemology (Feld 1996, 2015), transduction (Helmreich 2007, 2010) as well as Jean-Paul Thibaud’s concept of ambiances (2011), Michael Bull’s mobile listening and auditory bubble (2005, 2007). The workshop is connected with a paper entitled Immersive listening to imagined soundscapes in urban public spaces (panel: Sensory anthropology and new urban commons).
