Celebrating Invisibility: Romanian Care Workers in Italy
The paper focuses on descriptions of day to day activities of migrant care workers but also on spectacular events such as the organization and the consequences of ‘The Party of the Counter-Hour,’ an event set up by the protagonist of this paper, a Romanian care worker, with support from a local Italian cultural association. The central argument of the article is that shifting contexts between different regimes of life and work makes explicit the clash between migrant workers’ words and the long term economic, financial and moral ties implicit in being part, and wanting to also impose distance from a particular household or extended kin group in Romania.
